Anyone who breaks state DUI laws will eventually answer to the law. Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton is obviously no exception, as recently reported by MyFOXDFW. It appears Walton may have over-celebrated and ended up being arrested and charged with DUI–on her birthday.
According to Walton’s attorney, Walton was driving on Texas’ Interstate 20 the night of October 7. She was on her way home from a birthday dinner. A cop pulled over her for speeding. She was going 71 mph in a 55 mph construction zone. Walton took a field sobriety test and failed. She refused to take a breath test. She was arrested and taken to jail, where she stayed for a while before being released on bond.
This isn’t Walton’s first run-in with the law. She was involved in other incidents in Arkansas, according to the Weatherford Democrat. Walton’s attorney stated that her client accepts full responsibility for her actions. Walton is the daughter is Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton. Forbes Magazine listed her as the 9th richest person in the U.S., with a worth of $21 billion.
Walton can afford the best DUI defense attorney money can buy, but not even the best attorney will sway a judge who couldn’t care less about who she is or her status. The laws apply to everyone regardless of socio-economic status, profession, education or background. Walton may get off with a stern warning. She may be ordered to community service or probation. She may do a little jail time, depending on her previous record. One thing’s for certain–she can’t go on thumbing her nose at the law forever. Eventually, she’ll run out of second chances.
